The trend, explained
What is Italian Brainrot?
Italian brainrot is a viral internet trend built around surreal, AI-generated cartoon characters given absurd, Italian-sounding made-up names. Think a shark in sneakers called "Tralalero Tralala," or a crocodile crossed with a fighter jet called "Bombardiro Crocodilo." The humour comes from how gloriously nonsensical it all is, the characters mean nothing, and that's exactly the point.
The word "brainrot" describes online content so silly and repetitive it feels like it's melting your brain (in a fun way). Pair that with the fake-Italian naming style and the AI-art look, and you get a meme format that exploded across TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels in 2024–2025, especially with kids and teens.
Where did it come from?
The trend grew out of AI-image and text-to-speech meme culture, where creators generate a weird character, give it a rhythmic Italian-sounding name and a short voiceover, and post it. A handful of early characters went massively viral, other creators piled in with their own, and a whole shared "brainrot universe" of recurring characters was born.
Famous Italian brainrot characters
Some of the best-known characters that defined the genre:
- Tralalero Tralala, A shark wearing blue Nike sneakers, one of the characters that kicked the whole trend off.
- Bombardiro Crocodilo, A crocodile fused with a military bomber jet. Absurd, iconic, endlessly remixed.
- Tung Tung Tung Sahur, A wooden log-man named after the rhythmic drum call used to wake people for the pre-dawn meal in Ramadan.
- Ballerina Cappuccina, A ballerina with a cappuccino cup for a head, pure elegant nonsense.
- Brr Brr Patapim, A tree-creature hybrid with a long nose, another fan favourite of the genre.
Is Italian brainrot appropriate for kids?
The core format, silly AI cartoon animals with funny names, is lighthearted and broadly kid-friendly, which is a big reason it took off with younger audiences. As with anything online, individual videos vary, so it's worth watching alongside younger kids. Making your own characters in a dedicated, rated-4+ app is a safer way to join in than scrolling endless feeds.
How to make your own Italian brainrot character
You don't need to be an artist or know how to prompt an AI model. Rotino does it for you: type any two things, like cactus + dinosaur or owl + toaster, tap Generate, and it invents an original brainrot character combining them, in the classic googly-eyed cartoon style. Save it to your gallery and share it in seconds.
It's the fastest way to go from "what if I combined these two random things?" to a finished, shareable character. Every result is unique, so you can keep making them until you find your new favourite.
